KERDI waterproofing membrane in three widths and five lengths
Reliably waterproofing ceramics since 1987: The KERDI membrane is what makes our waterproofing system under the tiles so special – and is now part of an extensive product family.
It once revolutionised the market and has since become indispensable below the tiles: the KERDI waterproofing membrane in bright orange. The lightweight, waterproof membrane with a fleece surface has evolved today into a complete system of coordinated components for bonded waterproofing that protects wet areas from water reliably and in accordance with standards.
Before the introduction of bonded waterproofing, this was THE central dilemma facing tilers: Although tiles themselves are waterproof, the finished tile coverings are not. Because moisture can seep through the joints and cracks in the substrate – and, in the worst case, damage the building structure. For long-term, reliable installation, what lies below the tile has therefore always been crucial.
Before the 1990s, waterproofing of the substrate was considered a real risk. Waterproofing slurries required additional drying time, were time-consuming to apply and were prone to problems due to uneven layer thicknesses. Although bitumen membranes did protect the substrate, they were difficult for tile adhesive to bond to. Our conclusion was that neither method proved to be permanently watertight and water regularly penetrated into the structure. The result: Mould, efflorescence and damage to screeds and walls – especially in bathrooms and wet areas.
It was exactly the same experience for master tiler, Werner Schlüter. What he and his fellow craftsmen needed was a reliably waterproof intermediate layer that was easy to install and, when correctly installed, provided a bond between the substrate and the tiles.
That was exactly how Schlüter-KERDI came into being.
Schlüter-KERDI comprises a polyethylene film with an orange-coloured fleece layer on both sides. The membrane is supplied in rolls and can be cut to size using a standard utility knife along the lines of the printed cutting grid.
For joints and transitions between the floor and walls, KERDI-KEBA waterproofing bands are also applied overlapping each other.
Prefabricated parts for challenging areas such as corners or pipe penetrations are bonded to the KERDI or DITRA waterproofing layer by means of a waterproof adhesive.
KERDI makes ceramic tiles waterproof: The plastic membrane, laminated with a fleece fabric on both sides, when used in conjunction with the installed tiles and pavers, does not allow any water to penetrate. No wonder that the bonded waterproofing method quickly established itself as the new technical standard in the 1990s. In 2010, it was finally included in DIN 18534 as 'Waterproofing with waterproofing materials (AIV-B) in panel-shaped -form …'. Since then, KERDI waterproofing solutions have not only been watertight, but also tested within the system and in accordance with the relevant standards.
The combination of waterproofing membrane, tile adhesive and tiles ensures that this results in a reliable and watertight seal.
For corners or pipe penetrations, the KERDI system includes suitable prefabricated parts that can be easily combined with the waterproofing membrane.
The protection of adjoining rooms is especially important in bathrooms with floor-level showers. A capillary barrier such as KERDI-CID prevents the spread of water beneath the tiles.
Practical experience applied to practical situations: Werner Schlüter made the best of a difficult situation and developed a groundbreaking innovation in the truest sense of the word, which remains one of the company’s success stories right up to the present day. This is also because the KERDI membrane is so convenient to use: It is lightweight, convenient to carry and transport, easy to unroll and quick to glue down. The thin-film membrane revolutionised waterproofing technology in 1987 and took the tiling trade by storm, just as quickly as it can be installed.

The term "bonded waterproofing" says it all: Far more than the sum of its parts. Different layers work together constructively to create a waterproof seal – teamwork at its best, in other words. At Schlüter-Systems, the waterproofing product line comprises the extensive range of KERDI products and the DITRA uncoupling mats. In the area of the panels, KERDI-BOARD is also used – an installation panel that is laminated on both sides with a fleece fabric surface. Together with the associated prefabricated parts, such as internal and external corners, waterproofing collars and sealing bands, as well as sealing and installation adhesives, they form a fully tested complete system. Naturally, this comes with the general building inspection test certificate (abP) required by the applicable standards.

Whether as a classic uncoupling mat or with a heating function: DITRA provides reliable waterproofing while also uncoupling the substrate from the tile covering. Joints are sealed with the KERDI-KEBA sealing band – and then they're immediately ready for tiling.
The two-component adhesive KERDI-COLL bonds our KERDI, DITRA and DITRA-HEAT KERDI, DITRA and DITRA-HEAT sheet-form waterproofing membranes, as well as the KERDI-BOARD board-form waterproofing membrane.
The practical KERDI-TS bathtub sealing band set ensures that shower trays and bathtubs are sealed in accordance with the relevant standards. The waterproof connection band is fixed in place by means of self-adhesive sound insulation strips, and the joint area is filled with the KERDI-FIX installation adhesive included in the set.
The waterproofing of corners must be carried out just as reliably as that of surfaces. The precut sections KERDI-KERECK do this in no time at all – for internal and external corners, for right-angled corners as well as for corners that are not completely square.
KERDI-KEBA sealing band effectively waterproofs abutting joints and connections – on all DITRA and KERDI waterproofing membranes as well as on KERDI-BOARD. It is laminated with fleece fabric on both sides and is simply embedded in a system-compatible sealing adhesive such as KERDI-COLL.
Puts an end to fiddly work when sealing pipe openings and retrofitting wall-mounted fixer taps: the KERDI-PAS waterproofing collar is suitable for pipe diameters between 20 and 40 mm and comes in a practical set with a plastic sleeve and installation accessory.
The centrepiece of our waterproofing for more than three decades: the Schlüter-KERDI membrane with a fleece laminated on both sides for optimum anchoring in the tile or sealant adhesive. Lightweight, waterproof, easy to install.
More than just a building panel: The lightweight KERDI-BOARD installation panel is approved as a bonded waterproofing system by the building authorities and can be fastened to the substrate with screws or adhered with tile adhesive. Not only can it be used to create partition walls, niches, coverings or seating areas, it also provides a suitable foundation for tile installation.
Door transitions and protection of adjoining rooms in accordance with the relevant standards: The KERDI-CID waterproofing set acts as a reliable capillary barrier at floor level to prevent water from spreading beneath the tile covering.
Yes, as a general rule, KERDI can be installed on a heated structure. During installation and the drying period, it is important that the substrate is not heated. Only after the drying time specified by the manufacturer of the thin-bed mortar can the radiant panel heating system be put into operation.
For waterproofing and uncoupling membranes on heated structures in floor areas, however, we recommend the installation of Schlüter-DITRA. It can effectively uncouple the tiled covering from the substrate, thus counteracting the more frequent movements within the structure caused by temperature differences and preventing cracks in the covering.
For pipe penetrations, the KERDI-KM (for pipes with a diameter of 25 m) or KERDI-MV (for various pipe diameters and twin pipes) are bonded using KERDI-COLL pipe collars. Alternatively, the KERDI-PAS set is available for installations involving existing pipe protrusions located within the waterproofing plane that are to be fitted with an internally threaded tap extension. It comprises a plastic sleeve and a KERDI-MV collar. Both of them are adhered around the pipe protrusion to ensure reliable waterproofing of the subsequently installed internally threaded tap extension after removing the plastic sleeve:
That depends on the thin-bed mortar used. Under certain circumstances, a fast setting adhesive in accordance with DIN EN 12004 can enable tiles and pavers to be installed on the bonded waterproofing after just 2 hours. With a standard-setting thin-bed mortar, however, the drying time can be as long as 24 hours.
