Stays calm when things become stressful.

Small or large formats, floor heating systems or different types of substrate? Schlüter-DITRA equalises stresses, protects floor coverings and makes the job of the installer considerably easier. Since 1987, the uncoupling mat has been providing effective waterproofing, offering reliable load distribution and creating floors that are stable, comfortable and highly durable. An innovation inspired by practical experience – for craftsmanship that impresses and areas that stand the test of time.

The idea

Tiles that can be installed without cracking? In 1987, Werner Schlüter was able to do exactly that. Using the Schlüter-DITRA 25 uncoupling mat, he created an invisible "cushion" under the tiles that absorbs stresses in the substrate, cushioning any damage and making installation much easier. DITRA stands for waterproofing and load transfer – exactly what the membrane does: It provides waterproofing, reliably transfers mechanical stresses, thereby protecting against cracks. In the same year, Schlüter also brought KERDI onto the market – a waterproofing membrane that keeps bathrooms and wet rooms permanently protected – a double shot of innovation for the industry.

Since 2022, the system has simply been called DITRA – cleverly upgraded with the EasyCut cutting grid and EasyFill design and now also suitable for large formats. Special variants such as DITRA-DRAIN for precise drainage, DITRA-SOUND for sound reduction in the space, or DITRA-HEAT-E for electric heating make the system flexible enough for virtually any application. And DITRA? It continues to be the original uncoupling mat – reliable, well-established and still innovative to this day.

Clever basis

Schlüter-DITRA is a flexible polypropylene membrane with practical square recesses; the anchoring fleece on the underside provides stability. Its thickness, measured across the stud structure, is around 3.5 millimetres.

Optimally connected

Special air release vents quickly allow trapped air to escape, while the undercuttings ensure optimum bonding with the tile adhesive.

What makes Schlüter-DITRA so unique

Reliable uncoupling
Durable waterproofing
Controlled vapour pressure equalisation
Even load distribution
Secure bonded assembly

#1 Reliable uncoupling

DITRA makes cracks in the covering a thing of the past. Their special structure effectively separates the tiles from the substrate – movements in the screed or concrete are no longer transmitted directly. This helps ensure a stable surface structure that is durable. This uncoupling is worth its weight in gold, especially on difficult substrates such as hybrid constructions, renovation projects or large-format tiles. It prevents stress cracks, equalises expansion and ensures that tiles maintain their full aesthetic appeal and functionality.

#2 Durable waterproofing

Whether bathroom, kitchen or terrace – moisture is an issue that affects all areas. The DITRA membrane provides additional security here: It acts as a reliable waterproofing layer and protects sensitive substrates from penetration by water. The combination of polyethylene membrane and fleece fabric forms a dense, stable layer that prevents the penetration of moisture. This keeps the structure dry, reduces the risk of damage caused by moisture and preserves the quality of the tile covering. Particularly in wet rooms or in outdoor areas, this protection is essential.

#3 Controlled vapour pressure equalisation

Changing temperatures or residual moisture in the substrate? Not a problem. DITRA also intelligently compensates for these effects. Its special structure allows any vapour pressure build-up to escape in a controlled way – without damaging the tiles or joints. This protects not only the covering, but also the entire structure. Especially in new constructions or on balconies and terraces, where temperature variations and moisture often occur at the same time, DITRA ensures consistently stable conditions below the surface.

#4 Even load distribution

DITRA has been doing its bit – even when things become really challenging. The unique structure of the membrane evenly redistributes any forces that may occur, thus ensuring a permanently secure bond between the substrate, the membrane and the tile covering. Whether in residential areas, public spaces or on surfaces subject to heavy foot traffic, the floor remains resilient, solid and structurally stable. The perfectly matched components help create a resilient adhesive bond and ensure the stability of the covering, even when subject to mechanical stress.

#5 Secure bonded assembly

DITRA can be used on wall and floor areas to connect tile coverings to the substrate. The fleece fabric on the underside is embedded in the thin-bed mortar and the recessed indentations provide mechanical anchorage. This creates a stable bond between the tile and the substrate, which is designed to stand up to long-term use. To attach wall coverings, anchoring wall plugs may additionally be used if needed.

Milestones of the DITRA innovation

1987

The year Schlüter-DITRA 25 was introduced

The DITRA-25 uncoupling mat marked a new era for durable and safe tiled floors.

2006

Schlüter-DITRA-DRAIN

With Schlüter-DITRA-DRAIN, the company introduced a passive capillary bonded drainage and uncoupling system for ceramic tiles and natural stone, for both indoor and outdoor installations.

2007

Schlüter-DITRA-SOUND

Premiered at the BAU trade fair in Munich: Schlüter-DITRA-SOUND, a heavy-duty polyethylene membrane with a anchoring fleece, reduces impact noise and reliably protects high-quality floor coverings from cracks and other damage.

2013

Schlüter-DITRA-HEAT-E

Electric heating system meets uncoupling: Schlüter-DITRA-HEAT-E combines heat and protection in a single system for floors and walls.

2022

Schlüter-DITRA and DITRA-HEAT-PS

The DITRA series is constantly being developed: DITRA-25 is now known simply as DITRA with new features that make it even easier to install.

Even faster and with even fewer materials, the popular electric heating system DITRA-HEAT-PS can be installed using the peel-and-stick version. The pressure sensitive adhesive eliminates the need to install tile adhesive below the mat.

2024

Schlüter-DITRA-PS

DITRA-PS extends the DITRA range with a version that has a pressure sensitive adhesive on the underside. It can be installed without the need for additional adhesive on the underside.

Frequently asked questions and helpful tips

How should the substrate be prepared for installing DITRA?

The substrate for an uncoupling mat must be clean, dry, stable and level so that the mat adheres correctly and cracks are prevented. Any cracks, irregularities or highly absorbent surfaces should be filled or primed beforehand where necessary.

How long does it take before tiles can be installed on Schlüter-DITRA?

Once DITRA has been applied to the substrate, the tiles can be installed immediately – without having to wait for the mortar to harden.

When tiles are installed using Schlüter-DITRA, are movement joints required?

DITRA is not a substitute for movement joints – these are essential in any tile installation to prevent stresses. Choose Schlüter-DILEX profiles: They prevent sound bridges and water damage, are low-maintenance and very well suited for protecting tile edges.

Can Schlüter-DITRA be used as a substrate for mosaic tiles?

The smallest recommended tile dimensions for DITRA is 5 × 5 cm. For smaller sizes, please contact Schlüter-Systems to arrange a personalised solution for your application.
