Lighting

LED illuminated profiles are ideal for creating modern lighting concepts and for putting bathrooms, living spaces, commercial premises and stairs in the best light.

The fascination of light

Light is a true multi-talent: It shapes spaces, enhances their ambience and even influences our well-being. The system solutions from Schlüter-Systems make it simple to implement modern lighting concepts for bathrooms, living spaces and commercial premises as well as stairs.

The three principles of lighting

Lighting in the bathroom or living room is far more than just a practical necessity so that you don’t have to stumble around in the dark. It is a strategic tool that can be used to selectively control the ambience and add an emotional dimension to, for example, the daily shower routine. Light can invigorate, relax or inspire and is therefore an important factor in influencing our internal clock and its biological processes.

The lighting concept for any room must, however, satisfy all requirements – including safe navigation and illumination as well as creating an atmospheric, relaxing ambience. Harmonious yet functional lighting is therefore always the result of the interplay between three distinct types of lighting: primary, zonal and accent lighting.

Primary lighting

This primary lighting is used for visibility and safety within the space. It illuminates the area evenly and can, hence, help minimise the risk of slipping, bumping into things or tripping. Modern recessed spotlights or surface-mounted LED lights, for example, are ideal. The surface-mounted LED lights are advisable for diffuse light distribution to ensure even illumination. This prevents heavy shadows and is especially appreciated in bathrooms and living areas.

Zonal lighting

Zonal lighting, also known as functional lighting, provides targeted light on areas that need extra brightness for specific activities. The mirror above the vanity unit is often the focal point in the bathroom, either in the form of separate mirror lights, integrated lighting or light strips that are mounted along the sides of the mirror or all the way around its circumference. This category also includes reading lights, workplace lighting and staircase lighting.

Accent lighting

Accent or mood lighting creates the desired atmosphere in a space and its brightness, colour and colour temperature can generally be adjusted. It is often implemented as indirect lighting and installed behind furniture, paintings or wall panels, in niches or skirting areas. Mood lighting in the shower also falls into this category.

Lighting in the bathroom: A home win for LED profiles

Whether it’s a refreshing shower, a glare-free mirror, a seemingly floating bathtub or coloured lighting accents: LED profiles have become a 'must-have' for stylish lighting in the shower, such as in niches and linear lights or behind wall-mounted elements. These lights really show off their full potential in the bathroom, providing the best light at the right time of day, because the white tone and colours can be individually adjusted and easily changed at any time to suit personal preferences. The fully encased LED tubes are protected with IP67 protection rating against temporary immersion and comply with the stringent safety requirements for wet areas.

Lighting in the living room: Indirect light for modern living spaces

Living spaces often have to fulfil several functions: A kitchen with true-to-colour lighting is combined with an inviting dining area, and a workspace for the day is complemented by a reading corner for the evening. Although we need sufficiently bright light in one particular situation, we prefer cosy mood lighting in the other. This combined use of space makes it all the more important to complement the necessary general lighting with mood-enhancing accent lighting. Creative lighting ideas, such as LED skirting profiles, backlit wall panels or illuminated cornices, are often the perfect choice here as they create soft lighting effects that complement standing lamps and wall lights.

Illuminated staircases: Safety, one step at a time

Wherever there are barriers or obstacles, good lighting is of the greatest importance – if only for safety reasons. This applies in particular to stairs – in both living spaces and commercial premises. The lighting of stairs, using light profiles to illuminate the stair nosings and edges of landings, for example, improves the visibility of the stair treads and consequently reduces the risk of accidents. When planning and installing staircases, we recommend taking the lighting into account in addition to the installation of non-slip stair profiles.
