Redesigning a bathroom with system solutions from Schlüter

In this building project, the owner intended to renovate and extend his own home. This also included the renovation of the 4.8 m x 2.7 m main bathroom in the house. Enlisting the services of British bathroom experts Quell Bathrooms, the client set out the fundamentals of the renovation he wanted – the dream bathroom should definitely include a bathtub, shower and double washbasin with storage. He then gave free rein to the Managing Director of Quell, Vincent Pope, to come up with a few ideas from which the final design was selected.

The newly created bathroom utilised a number of Schlüter-Systems products to ensure high-quality workmanship for the client's considerable investment.

Special eye-catchers in this project are the freestanding bathtub and the level entry shower, surrounded by tiles with an elegant wood effect.

Schlüter-DITRA-HEAT-E electric radiant panel heating system was used to increase the comfort in the new dream bathroom.

The newly designed bathroom with light, large-format tiles is stylishly complemented by a wall-mounted vanity unit in a dusky brown colour.

A perfect substrate in orange

To ensure guaranteed waterproofing and drainage of the bathroom, the Schlüter-KERDI-LINE-WRKL drain set was used (note: this product is no longer available, alternatively Schlüter-KERDI-SHOWER-SK can be used.)

The waterproofing kit contains the Schlüter-KERDI waterproofing membrane, the Schlüter-KERDI-KEBA sealing band, the Schlüter-KERDI-KERECK decorative corner pieces and the Schlüter-KERDI-COLL sealing adhesive. The KERDI foil from the kit was used to waterproof the rear wall and around the shower wall. The rest of the room was lined with Schlüter-KERDI-BOARD, a 10 mm thick, waterproof tile substrate panel. All joints and connections were waterproofed with the sealing kit mentioned above.

The 80 cm long linear drainage channel was installed in an intermediate area with a two-way incline using prefabricated Schlüter-KERDI-SHOWER sloped trays. The drain is designed so it can be tiled with the rest of the floor – in this case, with wood-effect tiles – creating a visually seamless transition.

"Since we started using the wetroom sets from Schlüter three years ago, we haven't had any more problems", said Vincent. "We wouldn't want to do without them, as they offer a comprehensive and reliable solution for the preparation of a wetroom."

Warm feet throughout the entire room

The wooden floors in the project were already insulated, so Vincent installed the Schlüter-DITRA-HEAT-E electric floor heating system. "During renovation, it's always difficult to keep the floor construction low – but with the Schlüter-DITRA-HEAT-E system, all the construction stays within the height of the membrane, so there are no unexpected surprises", Vincent explained his decision.

It is great that DITRA-HEAT-E can be used throughout the room, including the shower area – this is often not possible with other systems.

Edge protection profiles in matching look for walls and floors

Vincent used the Schlüter-QUADEC-MC chrome-plated brass finishing profile to finish off the wood-effect wall tiles. He also used the matching Schlüter-QUADEC-MC/EV corner pieces for finishing the corners of the 1-metre high shower wall. "The Schlüter corner pieces provide an excellent finish for the tile edges and cover the tile edge cleanly." explained Vincent. "The corner pieces also ensure a good looking finish with no sharp edges – important because we are finishing a low wall that could be a source of injury if it is finished with a mitre."

Schlüter-JOLLY-AC in Matt Brilliant White (MBW) was used to finish off the edges in the wall areas where 1000 mm x 330 mm ceramic tiles were installed, including the window reveals and panelling. Three-quarters of the edges of the niches specially made by Quell for the project were also framed with MBW profiles, with QUADEC-MC used on the inside edge of each niche as part of a wood-effect shower wall.
