The recently opened Steigenberger Icon Europäischer Hof in Baden-Baden, Germany is an impressive blend of historical heritage and timeless elegance. As the inaugural location of the Steigenberger brand, the hotel embodies a unique symbolic significance and – 95 years after its original opening – continues to set new benchmarks for elegant sophistication and tasteful hospitality. The bathrooms played a special role in the overarching redesign concept, as they contribute significantly to the sense of comfort and enduring value. One challenge was to harmonise the existing protected historic building with state-of-the-art design elements. That's why the planners, installers and contractors chose Schlüter-Systems as their system provider – because they knew they could rely on Schlüter-Systems to implement their requirements in terms of safety, comfort and aesthetics exactly as planned.

The foyer of the Steigenberger Icon Hotel embodies a modern fusion of historical grandeur and contemporaneous luxury – an aspiration that was also applied to the renovation of the bathrooms.

No easy task as – in the historic part of the building in particular – the curves, alcoves and limited space posed considerable challenges when it came to planning and installation.

Underneath the tiles, the Schlüter-KERDI waterproofing system provides the necessary flexibility and security, whereas the DITRA-HEAT-E electric wall and floor heating system ensures invisible warmth and the latest in guest comfort.

In the new bathrooms, the smooth light diffusion of the LIPROTEC LED profiles accentuates the architectural clarity. Thanks to IP67 classification and system-compatible waterproofing, flush-mounted installation is no problem even in wet areas.

Historical identity meets modern elegance and technical refinement

A design highlight in the newly constructed bathrooms is the linear lighting. Schlüter-LIPROTEC-LLPM involved the use of LED modules whose carrier profiles were custom powder-coated in matt graphite black exclusively for this project. As a result, they fit perfectly with the surrounding flooring materials. The flush installation, uniform light distribution and precision of the modules add ambiance and depth, and really accentuate the clean architectural lines of the bathrooms. The design of the tile edges using the Schlüter-JOLLY finishing profile in the TRENDLINE colour of matt brilliant white underlines the high-quality aesthetic and delivers clean and timeless detailing that is both functional and pleasing to the eye.

One of the other main aspects of the technical bathroom design was the pleasant heating of the luxurious bathrooms, which was intentionally implemented without classic radiators at the Steigenberger Icon Europäischer Hof Baden-Baden. The electric floor and wall heating system Schlüter-DITRA-HEAT-E provides efficient, concealed heating and also offers reliable uncoupling and waterproofing in combination with the tiles.

Planning precision for sophisticated technical requirements

A hotel bathroom in a class of its own – harmoniously styled with a comprehensive range of Schlüter system solutions for waterproofing, heating, profile technology and lighting.

The contract for waterproofing all 126 bathrooms was awarded to the reputable contractor Fliesen Lang. Drawing on many years of experience with projects of this scale, their craftsmen completed the work with the highest level of reliability and care. Tried and tested for decades, KERDI-200 waterproofing membrane was used for this throughout. A bonded waterproofing membrane made of polyethylene with fleece laminated on both sides and KERDI-KEBA sealing bands and waterproofing collars, in combination with prefabricated parts, forms a complete, tested waterproofing system. The flexible sheets were easy to work with and could be precisely adjusted even in geometrically challenging areas, allowing installation in accordance with the DIN 18534 standard. The pliability of the sheets was particularly important in creating clean and safe solutions for the many niches, curves and projections.

Concealed heating, recessed lighting and stylish design accents: the finished bathrooms showcase how technological performance and aesthetic quality are not mutually exclusive in high-quality interior design. In fact, they can work together to form the basis for a timeless guest experience that does justice to the standards of a grand hotel while also reflecting the heritage of a historic location.
