General product information
Schlüter-KERDI-LINE-VARIO is a flexible, multi-part, linear drainage system for creating floor level showers in ceramic tiles or natural stone.
The two-piece horizontal KERDI-LINE-VARIO H 40 WOT drain unit comprises a drain body and a drain adapter. The drain body consists of an ultra slim drain that is rotatable by 360° with a drain housing without a built-in odour trap. In this case, a central siphon is absolutely essential.
The sound insulation element in the set reliably prevents localised sound transmission of the drain housing into the surrounding wall or floor structure. It also serves as a positioning aid when installed directly in the wall.
To guarantee a specially low assembly height with the Schlüter-KERDI-LINE-VARIO H 40, the drain adapter with integrated Schlüter-KERDI-FLEX sleeve is inserted at the factory into the drain body which is equipped with a seal and secured with a clamping ring to form a water-tight connection. The drain body can be turned through 360° by loosening the clamping ring. The drainage can therefore be adapted to every on-site connection situation.
Two design drainage profiles are available for KERDI-LINE-VARIO. These can be individually cut to size, are height adjustable and are supplied with two matching end caps.
Schlüter-KERDI-LINE-VARIO COVE is a cove drainage profile, which can be individually cut to size. It is available in brushed stainless steel V4A or powder coated aluminium with a textured TRENDLINE finish. It is available in 120 cm and 180 cm lengths.
It is available in two profile widths, 26 mm and 34 mm. In the narrow version, the drain opening is just 8 mm wide and has a length of 140 mm.
The drain opening of the wider version is 14 mm wide and 140 mm long and has a visually appealing removable cover panel.
An optional hair trap can be ordered for the wider version.
Schlüter-KERDI-LINE-VARIO WAVE is a W-shaped drainage profile that can be individually cut to size. It is also available in brushed stainless steel V4A or powder coated aluminium with a textured TRENDLINE finish. It is available in 120 cm and 180 cm lengths.
The aluminium version is available in two profile widths, 34 mm and 42 mm. In the narrower version, the drain opening in the centre is just 14 mm wide and 140 mm long. The drain opening of the 42 mm wide version is 24 mm wide and 140 mm long, which offers sufficient space for inserting an optional hair trap.
The stainless steel version with a profile width of 42 mm features a drain opening that is 25 mm wide and 140 mm long, and provides enough space to insert an optional hair trap.
The drain opening of all KERDI-LINE-VARIO WAVE profile versions has a visually appealing removable cover panel.
The elasticated KERDI collar ready-integrated into the drain adapter ensures the reliable connection of the drain body to the bonded waterproofing assembly – both in the floor area and on upright walls. It is protected during installation by the transparent protective cover.
Used in conjunction with the Schlüter-KERDI, Schlüter-DITRA, Schlüter-DITRA-HEAT or Schlüter-KERDI-BOARD waterproofing systems and the matching Schlüter-KERDI-COLL-L or Schlüter-KERDI-FIX system adhesives, installers can create certified bonded waterproofing assemblies with connected linear drainage. Schlüter waterproofing systems come with general building authority test certificates (abP) and the European Technical Assessment (ETA).
KERDI-LINE is a component of these waterproofing systems and can be installed in accordance with the DIN 18534 waterproofing standard.
Note:
Due to the variable drain construction, KERDI-LINE-VARIO requires the installation of a sloped screed. The surface of the screed should be waterproofed with DITRA (see product data sheet 6.1) or DITRA-HEAT (see product data sheet 6.4). Schlüter-SHOWERPROFILE-S and -R (see product data sheet 14.1) are supplementary components for creating a floor or wall connection. For the sloping tile edges, SHOWERPROFILE-S has a wedge-shaped design that matches the slope. Waterproof the surrounding walls with KERDI (see product data sheet 8.1) or use KERDI-BOARD (see product data sheet 12.1) to create waterproofing.
Soundproofing
For soundproofing purposes, as specified in DIN 4109, VDI 4100, ÖNORM B 8115-2 and/or SIA 181, the Schlüter-KERDI-LINE-SR is available with a sound insulation mat that complies with the requirements for impact sound and installation sound level and user noise limits in certified assembly variants of KERDI-LINE-VARIO. Please refer to our Planning Tool for further details.
Installation of KERDI-LINE-VARIO-H 40
- Position the KERDI-LINE-VARIO H 40 drain body and adapter at the centre of the weight-bearing structure or on the supplied 4 mm thick sound insulation component (possibly on suitable impact sound insulation; see section on soundproofing for further details). As you do so, observe the centre mark on the protective cover. For optimum alignment, insert the supplied spirit level in the recess provided in the protective cover.
- For direct wall installation, position the drain body with the profile connector and the protective lid directly with the 4 mm thick sound insulation component (included in the set) in front of the adjacent wall. This ensures a defined distance of 11 mm from the adjacent wall (not including the wall covering) when the WAVE profiles are used. If using COVE 26 profiles, this results in a distance of 15 mm from the wall in combination with the sound insulation component. To achieve a distance of only 11 mm from the wall, the sound insulation component should be omitted in the wall area when using COVE 26 profiles. Alternatively, the difference must be compensated for using a suitable material, such as 5 mm Schlüter-KERDI-BOARD for example. You can also use the COVE 34 profile, which has the same look, but is just 8 mm wider.
- For connection to the drainage pipe, loosen the clamping ring with the Allen key provided and align the drain body to match the on-site situation.
- Then check the adapter is still fully inserted. Then tighten the clamping ring hand-tight once again.
- After connecting to the drainage pipe, recheck the required positioning. To compensate for uneven areas or for height adjustment, you can also arrange the drain body with precision on a levelling layer.
- Please perform a leak test.
- Install the sloped screed (2%) in the shower floor area so it fully encloses and supports the load of the drain body. Use the screwed-down protective lid as an alignment and levelling aid. It must be flush with the top surface of the screed.
Installation of KERDI-LINE-VARIO-H 50
- Position the KERDI-LINE-VARIO-H50 drain body on the load-bearing structure or the supplied 4 mm sound insulation element. (It can also be positioned on a suitable sound insulation, see section on sound insulation.) As you do so, observe the centre mark on the protective cover. For optimum alignment, insert the supplied spirit level in the recess provided in the protective cover. Cut the drain adapter to match the height of the floor structure and carefully de-burr the edges, then loosen the clamping ring and insert the adapter into the drain body, using the lubricant supplied.
Note: To ensure that the height of coverings with insulation can fluctuate, cut the drain adapter in such a way that it does not sit directly on the drain body. - For direct wall installation, position the drain body with the profile connector and the protective lid directly with the 4 mm thick sound insulation component (included in the set) in front of the adjacent wall. This ensures a defined distance of 11 mm from the rising wall (excluding the wall covering) when using Schlüter-WAVE profiles. If using COVE 26 profiles, this results in a distance of 15 mm from the wall in combination with the sound insulation component. To achieve a distance of only 11 mm or less from the wall, the sound insulation component should be omitted in the wall area when using COVE 26 profiles. Alternatively, the difference must be compensated for using a suitable material, such as 5 mm Schlüter-KERDI-BOARD for example. You can also use the COVE 34 profile, which has the same look, but is just 8 mm wider.
- For connection to the drainage pipe, align the drain body to match the on-site situation.
- Check the fit of the drain body then retighten the clamping ring hand-tight.
- After connecting to the drainage pipe, recheck the required positioning. To compensate for uneven areas or for height adjustment, you can also arrange the drain body with precision on a levelling layer. As an option, the drain body can be firmly screwed to the load-bearing structure using the supplied attachment set.
- Please perform a leak test.
- Before installing the screed, please remove the enclosed spirit level. Install the sloped screed (2%) in the shower floor area so it fully encloses and supports the load of the drain body. Use the screwed-down protective lid as an alignment and levelling aid. It must be flush with the top surface of the screed.
Uncoupling and waterproofing
- If the screed is walkable, remove the protective cover. Apply thin-bed mortar to even out any flaws in the screed in this area.
- Then glue DITRA using thin-bed mortar (recommended notched trowel size 3 x 3 mm or 4 x 4 mm) or DITRA-HEAT (recommended notched trowel size 6 x 6 mm) firmly to the surface of the screed. Cut the edge insulation strips and the sound insulation component to the correct height. Tiles adhered over DITRA or DITRA-HEAT must have a size of at least 5 x 5 cm (see also product data sheet 6.1 or 6.4).
- To affix the KERDI sleeve, apply KERDI-COLL-L sealing adhesive (see product data sheet 8.4) to the adjoining waterproofing using a 3 x 3 or 4 x 4 mm notched trowel and make sure the entire surface of the KERDI sleeve is bedded in the adhesive. The curing time of the adhesive must be observed.
- Create and tightly seal the wall connections with KERDI-KEBA sealing tapes and KERDI-COLL-L.
- Tiles or natural stone can be used as covering materials. (The covering thickness must match the selected drainage profile)
Installation of drainage profiles
- Cut the drainage profile to size according to on-site requirements using the supplied cutting gauge or a suitable handsaw (do not use an angle cutter) and then deburr the profile.
- The set includes two end caps to create a simple and elegant finish.
- The COVE 26 and 34 and WAVE 34 profiles are supplied with a cover frame which you can fix in beforehand using thin-bed mortar to achieve a precise fit with the drain adapter.
- Adjust the height of the drainage profile by filling with thin-bed mortar below it until it is flush with or slightly below the covering surface. To ensure optimum load transfer, make sure the drainage profile is firmly bedded in mortar and there are no cavities, especially in the area of the drainage opening.
Note:
KERDI-LINE-VARIO can also be used in timber structures. Please contact us for further details. The drainage is based on the principle of surface water drainage. Consequently, water accumulates to a height of roughly 1 cm in the area of the drainage profile. The KERDI-LINE-VARIO linear drainage is therefore only intended to be positioned at the wall and in the centre area and is not to be used in the shower entrance area.
Please contact our Technical Department with any questions.

Material properties and areas of application
The Schlüter-KERDI-LINE-VARIO drainage system H50 G5 has been tested and certified in accordance with DIN EN 1253-1. The H40 G5 version has been tested and certified in accordance with DIN EN 1253-2. The version H40 G6 corresponds to DIN EN 1253-6.
With the exception of the aluminium version of the WAVE profile, all drainage profiles can withstand wheelchair use. Schlüter-KERDI-LINE-VARIO drainage profiles are available in a wide variety of materials and finishes. Clarify on a case-by-case basis whether the drainage system provided is suitable for the anticipated chemical, mechanical or other loads. Some general information on the material characteristics is provided below.
The brushed stainless steel V4A (material finish no. 1.4404 = AISI 316L) drainage profiles COVE and WAVE are particularly well suited for applications that, in addition to heavy mechanical stresses, must be able to withstand chemicals such as acidic or alkaline media and detergents. These profiles can be used in bathrooms of apartments, residential homes for the elderly, hotels, schools and public washroom and shower facilities. Even stainless steel of quality 1.4404 is not resistant to all chemical stresses such as hydrochloric and hydrofluoric acid or certain chloride and brine concentrations. In certain cases, this also applies to seawater pools. Clarify the feasibility of the application in good time if particular stresses are anticipated.
The COVE and WAVE drainage profiles in aluminium (textured coated aluminium) feature surfaces with a natural appearance. The aluminium is pre-treated (anodised) and then powder-coated. The coating is colour-stable, as well as UV and weather-resistant. The profiles can be used in bathrooms of apartments, residential homes for the elderly or hotels. Visible edges should be protected against abrasion and scratching.
To facilitate the periodic cleaning of the drainage channel and drain area, the set is supplied with matching cleaning brushes and instructions on their use. All cleaning agents must be free of hydrochloric and hydrofluoric acid. Avoid contact with other metals, such as regular steel, to prevent corrosion.
This also includes tools such as trowels or steel wool, e.g. tools used to remove mortar residue. Abrasive cleaning agents should not be used on sensitive surfaces. We recommend the use of the stainless steel cleaning polish Schlüter-CLEAN-CP.
