Climate action

From individual products right through to production, Schlüter-Systems relies on processes that conserve resources as much as possible in order to continuously reduce its ecological footprint.

Consciously taking a leadership role. For a smaller footprint.

Climate protection has become a global responsibility – and if we want to do justice to it, we must let our actions speak for themselves. That is why we act consistently. Our guiding principle: Reduce emissions, make efficient use of raw materials, avoid waste. Innovative technologies and state-of-the-art production processes enable us to actively contribute to a more climate-friendly future. Continuity is a key factor here – as climate protection requires foresight, adaptability and dynamic action.

Climate targets in mind. Focus on progress.

The consequences of climate change can be felt around the world – and make it necessary to rethink our approach at all levels. Companies play a central role in this: as creative forces, drivers of innovation and as leading examples. Those who invest strategically, produce mindfully and make sustainable decisions today not only increase their own competitiveness, but also safeguard the very foundation of tomorrow's world.

The Paris Climate Agreement marks a milestone in global climate protection. The aim is to substantially limit the increase in global average temperature – ideally to below 2 degrees Celsius compared to the pre-industrial reference value.

Germany is supporting this goal with tangible measures: The Federal Climate Protection Act envisages a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions of 88 per cent by 2040. The aim is to achieve climate neutrality by 2045.

Schlüter-Systems also takes this responsibility seriously. Our contribution begins where it has the greatest impact: in the continuous reduction of our CO2 footprint. A digital energy management system helps us maintain an overview of consumption and demand at all times. We use this as a basis for identifying potential savings – and for continually optimising our processes with the aim of reducing emissions.

Production with an eye to the future. Recycling with a systematic approach.

We are committed to using resources responsibly, taking into account both where they come from as well as their future. In the selection, manufacture and disposal of raw materials and products, we comply with ecological standards as far as possible. An important aspect that we take into account in our product development is the traceability of individual substances in the material cycle.

The Schlüter-KERDI bonded waterproofing membrane is based on polyethylene whereas the bonded uncoupling and waterproofing membrane Schlüter-DITRA is made from polypropylene. Both materials are physiologically harmless and have the advantage that they can be recycled.

Schlüter-KERDI-BOARD and some BEKOTEC panels (EN/P and EN/PF) are made of polystyrene and are free from the persistent flame retardant HBCD. This makes it straightforward to dispose of cutting waste.

Our products already contain a high level of recycled material.

Depending on suppliers and production batches, the corresponding percentage values vary within these ranges (as of 2025):

Schlüter stainless steel profiles

60–85 %

Schlüter aluminium profiles

up to 60%

Schlüter plastic profiles

up to 70%

Schlüter-BEKOTEC pavers

up to 70%

We ensure that our materials are recyclable:

The responsible use of resources does not end with the choice of materials for us – there is also much to be gained in the processing stage in terms of sustainability. Our approach: To close cycles.

During powder coating, any powder that has fallen is collected and fed back into the process instead of being extracted unused.

Our products are optimised for durability and can be extensively recycled at the end of their life cycle, for example as scrap metal.

Thinking globally. Acting locally.

Climate protection does not begin at company headquarters alone, but includes, as far as possible, the entire value chain that transforms products, systems and services into sustainable solutions. Our international sphere of activity has a clear focal point: our Iserlohn headquarters. This is where we combine regional strength with global impact.

What we do not manufacture ourselves, we purchase from carefully selected suppliers and partners. Our aim: to establish long-term, trusting relationships that are based on shared values.

Whenever possible, we work with regional business partners and short supply chains – because the shorter the distance, the lower the carbon footprint. We also strengthen the local economy and maintain control over production conditions that meet our requirements.

To help conserve resources, the raw material for our profiles is delivered in reusable transport crates. Semi-finished products are transported in reusable packaging or on replaceable pallets.

Raising awareness. Enabling change.

Climate protection begins in the mindset – and has an impact on daily life. Even small improvements can make a big difference. As an employer, we take responsibility: We are committed to promoting a shared understanding and actively pushing forward the "Climate protection" project within the Schlüter family.

Some of our work processes have been purposefully digitalised. Not only did we adapt the individual processes, but we also deliberately switched to programmes that promote resource-optimising collaboration. Fewer printouts, less waste – and greater sustainability in day-to-day work.

But climate protection is not just about technology – more importantly, it is about attitude. That is why we are systematic in communicating our activities within the company. This allows us to embed environmental awareness directly in our company culture – namely through each individual employee.

We see ourselves as a learning organisation. Fostering awareness also means creating space for questions, listening to and implementing new ideas. Encouraging sustainable practices is an integral part of our approach to a more climate-friendly future.
