Clever solutions for tiled walls

Although they don’t experience the same pressures as floor tiles that are constantly being walked all over, wall tiles still need their fair share of protecting. For a little extra luxury, heating your walls is something to consider as well as having plenty of storage to keep your bathroom tidy.

Waterproofing

Waterproofing is an essential provision for bathrooms as tile and stone installations using grout and adhesive are usually only water-resistant at best. Water-resistant means that moisture can penetrate these areas, collecting in the wall cavities and potentially causing mould or, even worse, leaks. With this in mind, it’s important to understand that the substrate onto which the tile or stone is being installed needs to be waterproof in order to prevent damage. No matter the quality, cost or extravagance of a tile installation, the integrity of the tile is only as good as its foundation.

If the existing substrate is flat, even and suitable for tiling onto, Schlüter-KERDI 200 is a waterproof membrane that is hung like wallpaper into a bed of adhesive. Otherwise, if you need to create an overlay onto the existing substrate, Schlüter-KERDI-BOARD is a waterproof backerboard that can also be used to create features such as shelves or seats – see our custom elements page for more information.

Whichever option you need, any joints between the membranes or boards are quickly and easily sealed with Schlüter-KERDI-KEBA sealing band and Schlüter-KERDI-COLL adhesive. Don’t forget to seal where any pipes come out of the wall with Schlüter-KERDI-MV. These are all areas that are considered weak points and need to be suitably waterproofed.

Tile protection

When it comes to tiling a wall, it’s not just the tile itself that needs serious consideration. Equally important is the tile profile, also known as a tile trim, which covers the edge of an exposed tile. This may seem like an afterthought, but the trim will allow you to finish the tiling in style and protect it for the long-term.

Whether you’re looking for a trim to contrast the tile design or one to blend in, there are plenty of options to choose from. One way to narrow down your choice is to choose your preferred colour or finish, then you can see the types of trim that are available (as not every trim is available in every colour). The Schlüter-TRENDLINE range of finishes provide the perfect match to many modern tile designs that replicate the look of wood, stone or concrete.

If you have a particular style of trim in mind, then this is another way to find the best option for you. Schlüter-QUADEC provides a geometric right-angled corner with Schlüter-JOLLY having a slightly slimmer finished look. Schlüter-RONDEC forms a symmetrically rounded corner whereas Schlüter-FINEC is the most discreet of our wall trims.

Storage & accessories

When it comes to bathroom storage, a lot of homeowners are on the hunt for a solution that keeps all those essential products tidy or hidden out of view.

If you’re considering storage at the start of a project, a niche is a popular option as it is integrated into the wall so doesn’t encroach into the shower area. They can be quite tricky and time consuming to construct so we’ve made it easy with a range of prefabricated KERDI-BOARD niches that are waterproof and quick to install. Options with lighting are available and the larger sizes have the option to include a shelf.

The Schlüter-SHELF collection includes corner options that can be fitted at any time to a tiled wall, allowing you to add extra storage without having to make big changes to a bathroom. Installation is easy as no drilling is required, and the shelf simply integrates into the grout joint with the use of a sealant.

If you need to create concealed access in a tiled wall for accessing a concealed cistern or pipework, try Schlüter-REMA as the clever design means it won’t affect the visual appearance of the tile covering.

Heating

We often talk about underfloor heating but what we really should be talking about is undertile heating as our electrical heating system, Schlüter-DITRA-HEAT-E, can also be used behind wall tiles. While not designed to directly replace a radiator, undertile heating on the wall is becoming increasingly popular as it provides additional ambient heating in scenarios where other heat sources are not practical. It also helps to dry out the condensation that typically forms on bathroom walls.

If you’re having any kind of seating in a bathroom, not only could you heat the seat itself, but you could also heat the wall behind it so there’s a cosy wall to lean against. Another option is to heat the wall behind a single towel rail if there isn’t space for a larger, heated towel rail. While it won’t be in direct contact with the towels, the undertile heating will help to dry the towels quicker.
