External applications

As much attention to detail should go into the protection of tile externally as you would put into an internal floor or wall installation. Consider the range of products available from Schlüter-Systems.

Protecting tile against the elements

External areas such as balconies and terraces experience extreme pressures because of weather conditions. For this reason, a tile or stone installation needs a higher level of protection. Whether it's surface drainage, tile edge protection or guttering, our range of products will help an installation endure these conditions and stand the test of time.

Unbonded installation

Unbonded or floating installation of pavers and other elements on balconies and terraces is a clever alternative to conventional bonded installation. With unbonded installation, balcony tiles can be laid in just a few steps and often more quickly than with bonded installation. And another plus point is that the tiles or slabs can be later removed without damaging the structure of the balcony.

Whether you wish to lay self-supporting pavers on a crushed stone bed, on mortar rings or on paver supports, our product solutions for outdoor applications enable different types of construction, resulting in an undamaged balcony with an unbonded paver installation. Moreover, almost any slope or site situation can be levelled and drained reliably.

Our appropriately designed drainage mats ensure that the drainage functions for the long term. The mats are long-lasting, withstand high compression stresses and guide any seepage water in the direction of the slope. By combining them with high-quality drainage channels, you can thus even realise structures with a low construction height for greater accessibility.

Waterproofing and drainage membranes

Large format tiles and natural stone slabs are incredibly popular in outdoor areas and a carefully prepared base (substrate) is needed to keep the floor coverings crack-free and protected for several years to be able to withstand extreme weather changes.

To provide drainage for large format tiles, Schlüter-DITRA-DRAIN 8 can be used, ventilating the tile and promoting quick-curing of the adhesive. Schlüter-DITRA-DRAIN also acts as an uncoupling membrane, to neutralise stresses and offer crack-free protection for an installation that can survive the great British weather!

Balcony edge profiles

The edges of balconies and terraces are constantly exposed to the weather and need additional measures to protect and provide a neat finish.

An assortment of balcony finishing profiles are available in the Schlüter-BARA range that cover the structural assembly to effectively protect the edges. A number of them are also available with brackets to allow the simple attachment of the Schlüter-BARIN gutter system.

To add contrast or interesting colour accents, some of the profiles from the BARA range can also be ordered in 190 colours of the RAL Classic chart. Find out more about the design options with MyDesign by Schlüter-Systems here.

Drainage systems

The targeted drainage of moisture to the drainage level is one of the essential tasks that must be mastered in the construction of balconies and terraces. With our products from the Schlüter-TROBA range, we offer you a variety of drainage solutions for different construction structures. What they all have in common: durable functionality and high load-bearing capacity.

Schlüter-TROBA-LINE in particular provides you with high-quality drainage channels for the safe drainage of accumulated water. If you are planning a drainage channel in front of your balcony or patio door, you even have the advantage that a low barrier construction with a lower installation height can be achieved.
