Material properties and areas of use
In special cases, the suitability of the material type must be clarified on the basis of anticipated chemical, mechanical and/or other stresses. The information below is only intended as a general guideline.
Anodised aluminium: The anodised layer provides the aluminium with a refined finish that remains unchanged in normal use. To protect visible surfaces from abrasion, immediately remove adhesive or grout from them and do not place foil over newly installed surfaces. Aluminium is sensitive to alkaline media. Cementitious materials become alkaline in combination with moisture. Depending on the concentration and exposure time, this may cause corrosion (aluminium hydroxide formation). Any cavities in which alkaline water can collect must therefore be avoided by ensuring that the profile and adjacent tiling are fully embedded in the setting material.
Stainless steel: Stainless steel can withstand high mechanical stresses and is highly resistant to chemicals. Yet even stainless steel of 1.4404 quality is not resistant to all chemical stresses. Substances such as hydrochloric or hydrofluoric acid and certain chloride or brine concentrations can cause damage. Any particular stresses anticipated should therefore always be clarified in advance.
Colour-coated aluminium: The aluminium is pre-treated and then powder-coated with a polyurethane covering. The coating is colour-stable, UV and weather-resistant. Visible edges should be protected against abrasion and scratching.
