Transition profile for floor coverings of different heights
Schlüter-RENO-U forms a stepless transition from tile coverings to other floors coverings of a lower height. The profile is available in a wide variety of materials and finishes and creates safe and visually appealing transitions to tiled coverings. The 4 mm outside profile edge is designed for creating neat connections to thin coverings such as linoleum, PVC or resin coatings. In addition, it protects the edge of adjacent coverings. The profile is also a proven solution for areas subjected to intensive stresses, such as loading docks or shopping centres.
What this product does
Schlüter-RENO-U is a profile for a stepless transition between floor coverings of different heights, for example for the transition from tiles to carpet. In addition, it protects the edge of adjacent coverings. The joint spacer creates a uniform joint cavity with the tile.
RENO-U has also proved to be reliable in areas subjected to intensive point loads (garages, loading docks, shopping centres etc). Depending on the profile height, the visible surface forms an angle of approximately 17° to 25° and ends with a 4 mm stop edge (except for height H = 35 mm). This eliminates trip edges between coverings of different heights.
Schlüter-RENO-EU, -EBU and -MU do not have a joint spacer.
How to install this product
- Select Schlüter-RENO-U according to the tile thickness.
- Fill the hollow space on the underside of the profile with tile adhesive.
- Apply tile adhesive to the area where the tile covering will end, using a notched trowel.
- Press the trapezoid-perforated anchoring leg of Schlüter-RENO-U firmly into the adhesive and align it.
- Trowel additional adhesive over the trapezoid perforated anchoring leg to ensure full coverage.
- Firmly press the adjoining tiles into place and align them in such a way that the upper profile edge is flush with the tile (the profile should not protrude over the surface of the covering; preferably, it should be approx. 1 mm below the top level of the covering). All tiles in the profile area must be fully embedded.
- The tile is set to the lateral joint spacer, which ensures a uniform joint of 1.5 mm. In the case of stainless steel or brass profiles, a joint of approx. 1.5 mm is recommended.
- Completely fill the space between the tile and the profile with grout.
What this product is made from
Schlüter-RENO-U is available in the following materials:
- E = stainless steel V2A, material no. 1.4301 = AISI 304
- EB = brushed stainless steel
- A = aluminium
- M = brass
- AE = anodised aluminium
Material properties and areas of application
In special cases, the suitability of a proposed type of profile must be verified, based on anticipated chemical, mechanical, and/or other stresses.
Schlüter-RENO-MU are profiles made of brass. Minor manufacturing flaws are unavoidable on their untreated surfaces. They are suitable for absorbing high mechanical stresses. Brass is resistant to most chemicals used in tiled environments. Brass that is exposed to air will oxidise, resulting in a natural patina. Exposure to moisture or aggressive substances can reinforce the oxidation, resulting in stains on the profile surface.
Schlüter-RENO-AU are profiles made of aluminium. Technically, these are so-called semi-finished products, in which minor manufacturing traces also cannot be avoided. The suitability of the profiles should be reviewed based on the anticipated chemical stresses. Aluminium is sensitive to alkaline media. Cementitious materials, in conjunction with moisture, become alkaline, which may result in corrosion depending on the concentration and length of exposure (aluminium hydroxide formation). Adhesive or grout residue must therefore be removed immediately from visible surfaces. Solidly embed the profile in the setting material to prevent alkaline water from accumulating in small cavities.
In case of more demanding visual requirements, Schlüter-RENO-AEU or -EBU with post-treated, high-quality finishes are available.
Schlüter-RENO-AEU profiles made of anodised aluminium have an anodised finish that retains a uniform appearance during normal use. The finish may be damaged by aggressive substances or abrasive stresses. Tile adhesive, mortar and grout can scratch the surface of the profile; therefore, any residue must be removed immediately. Otherwise, the description regarding aluminium applies.
Schlüter-RENO-EU/-EBU are made of stainless steel 1.4301 (V2A) and are particularly well suited for applications that, in addition to heavy mechanical stresses, require resistance to chemicals such as acidic or alkaline detergents. Even stainless steel is not resistant to all chemical stresses.
Substances such as hydrochloric or hydrofluoric acid or certain chloride and brine concentrations may cause damage. In certain cases, this also applies to seawater pools. Special anticipated stresses should therefore be verified in advance.
Maintenance & Care
How to look after this product
The profiles require no special maintenance or care. Oxidation films on brass or aluminium may be removed with a common polishing agent; however, they do reoccur. Damaged anodised surfaces can be restored with paint. Stainless steel surfaces exposed to the environment or aggressive substances should be cleaned periodically using a mild household cleaner. Regular cleaning maintains the neat appearance of stainless steel and reduces the risk of corrosion. All cleaning agents must be free of hydrochloric and hydrofluoric acid.
Avoid contact with other metals, such as regular steel, to prevent corrosion. This also includes installation tools such as trowels or steel wool, e.g. for the removal of mortar residue. We recommend the use of the stainless steel cleaning polish Schlüter-CLEAN-CP.
